Virtual renal health program allows patients with renal complications to delay the progression of this disease
- “La Escuelita Barton” is a program born in pandemic under the need to continue educating patients with renal complications and who do not yet require a dialysis process, to help delay the progress of this disease.
It started with 7 patients online and today there are more than 50 who participate weekly virtual talks organized by the multidisciplinary team of the Nephrology service of the Alberto Barton hospital, managed by IBT Group.
The Nephrology service launched this pilot so that its patients learn from the simplest practices how to take the pressure, know their medication and have healthy lifestyle habits.
Also, many of them have managed to improve their health; such is the case of Ricardo Bisso, a patient who has been participating in the program for a year. He tells us his experience:
“La Escuelita Barton changed my life, I had problems with my kidney and shortly before my leg had been amputated because of diabetes and I felt very bad. As I entered the talks, that changed. It helped me improve my health in every way. I look forward to connecting every Wednesday because I feel listened to and loved by every staff who runs the school”.
Like him, there are many success stories, which are reflected in the achievements of the program:
- After 4 years, more than 90% of patients have not been admitted to dialysis by the end of 2023.
- It has more than 90% weekly attendance.
Thanks to “Escuelita Barton” and its multidisciplinary team made up of: medical, nursing, social work, psychology and nutrition has been able to educate and raise patients’ awareness of the importance of self-care, relatives and/or caregivers to be part of accompanying this process for the patient.
